The provincial election is likely more than six months away, but some Manitoba voters will to see the major party leaders go head-to-head next week.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities confirmed Wednesday it will play host to a provincial political leaders forum at its spring convention in Winnipeg.

It will be the first time the front-runners for premier — Progressive Conservative Premier Heather Stefanson and NDP Leader Wab Kinew — as well as Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont, will square off face to face outside the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.

The event takes place April 4 at 9:15 a.m. at the RBC Convention Centre, during the AMM convention that runs April 3-5.

It’s the first major event of the 2023 election season, with Manitoba voters not expected to go to the polls until Oct. 3. Stefanson could call an early election, but has indicated several times she has no plans to do so.

Although the Opposition New Democrats are leading in the polls, the governing PCs have picked up a bit of support in the latest Free Press-Probe Research Inc. survey of Manitoba voters’ intentions. Polled support for the Liberals has fallen to single digits.

Only the leaders of the three parties currently with elected representatives in the Manitoba legislature are taking part in the forum.

Keystone Party of Manitoba leader Kevin Friesen said Wednesday he hasn’t been invited.

The Green Party of Manitoba confirmed newly-elected leader Janine Gibson was not asked to participate.

In past elections and leadership races, a forum usually consists of the opponents making opening statements, then answering questions put to them by the moderator. Rarely do they provide an opportunity for heated debate.

The AMM forum (to be moderated by CJOB radio host Richard Cloutier) is similar, with opening statements, followed by six questions put to each of the leaders. Their answers will be followed by minute-long rebuttals by the other two party leaders.
