A Winnipeg woman who spent more than two years doing intricate beadwork on a medallion of Indigenous Manitoba war hero Sgt. Tommy Prince is pleading for the return of her art.
Chantel Scott, her three-year-old daughter and her aunt were forced to leave their West End side-by-side unit shortly after moving in at the end of February because of a bedbug infestation.
While they were away for several days to allow exterminators to deal with the problem, thieves broke in and stole most of the family’s valuables, including the “priceless” artwork.

Scott, 30, whose mother was taken from her family during the ’60s Scoop, started beading after the birth of her daughter as a way to reclaim her Indigenous identity. She grew up not knowing much about her culture as a result of her mother’s experience.
The single mom who works full time has worked on the medallion of Prince — a distant relative — when she was able to find a few minutes here and there; she does beadwork for customers, as well.
The medallion was something she wanted to do for herself. In a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon, Scott offered to reimburse anyone who bought it and is willing to return it.
“If anyone sees my Tommy Prince beadwork, can you buy it back please. My place was broken into, and all my bead supply and art pieces have been taken!!! This specific piece was to be hung up on my wall! I really want it back. I spent 2.5 years slowly beading it! I know it could be circling around! It can be brought back. I WILL BUY IT BACK!!!!…”
A GoFundMe that has been set up for Scott and her daughter to replace the missing items, including most of her beading supplies, their TV, a bike and some brand-new power tools she received as a birthday gift.
The medallion, however, is what means the most to her.
“If I ran into somebody who had it, I would offer them all the cash I had,” she said.
“Honestly, I just want it back. I don’t want anybody to get in trouble for it, because I know if they do, I won’t get it back. I don’t care where you got it from, or how you ended up with it. I just want it back.”
