RM OF HANOVER — A 19-year-old woman and several high school students were taken to hospital after a highway crash involving a school bus on Wednesday.
St-Pierre-Jolys RCMP and the Rural Municipality of Hanover’s fire department were sent to the intersection of highways 59 and 52 at about 2:15 p.m. after a vehicle struck a school bus.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre said the bus was heading south on Highway 59 when the driver tried to make a left-hand turn onto Highway 52 and was hit by a smaller northbound vehicle.
A statement from Hanover School Division said the bus was headed to Steinbach Regional Secondary School after a field trip.
Eighteen students, one teacher and the driver were on the bus.
The driver, a 19-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Winnipeg on the STARS air ambulance helicopter. The driver of the school bus and six students were taken to hospital as a “precautionary measure,” the school division said Wednesday. RCMP said Thursday that none of those seven people suffered serious injuries.
Another bus transported the other students to the school after they were examined by emergency personnel.
The intersection remained closed for most of Wednesday afternoon as the investigation continued.
