Sport Minister Obby Khan told Progressive Conservative party members he’s ready for a fight — in the political arena — following a public spat with NDP Leader Wab Kinew.

At the PC party’s annual convention Saturday afternoon, Khan was asked by a delegate whether he has been adequately briefed on martial arts.

The query was part of a question-and-answer session with the Tory ministers following a keynote address by Premier Heather Stefanson.

Sport Minister Obby Khan says he’s ready to spar — in the political arena — following a public spat with NDP Leader Wab Kinew.

After a moment of scattered applause, Khan said he believed the question was alluding to a tense handshake with Kinew on Thursday during a celebration of Turban Day at the Manitoba legislature.

Khan raised the encounter — in which he alleges Kinew cursed and shoved him — as a matter of privilege, claiming his rights as a member of the legislative assembly were violated. Kinew has disputed Khan’s allegations of profanity and physical shoving.

The NDP leader acknowledged he was not pleased with partisan comments made by Khan at the event. Kinew agreed there was a tense handshake between the two men, but maintains the exchange was strictly verbal and did not include profanities. He apologized for what transpired and the upset it caused.

Khan told the crowd of about 250 delegates he is proud of his remarks at the Turban Day event, and he is proud to have raised the handshake publicly.

“If that offended my martial arts opponent, so be it,” Khan said.

“I am proud to bring that forward so Manitobans know what our opponent is,” he said. “That is our opponent and that is what we are fighting against, and we are fighting for Manitobans.”

The sport minister did not say whether he is trained in martial arts. However, the former Winnipeg Blue Bomber offensive lineman said he has the backing of his colleagues.

Environment Minister Kevin Klein later reminded the room he has a third degree black belt in taekwondo in case any opposition members were wondering.
