A 21-year-old Manitoba woman has been charged with impaired driving with three children under three years old in the vehicle.

Red River North RCMP said they received two 911 calls Sunday night about a vehicle driving erratically and nearly sideswiping other vehicles on Highway 8, near Hwy. 27, in the Rural Municipality of West St. Paul.

The suspect vehicle was stopped by Mounties on McPhillips Road, police said Monday.

The driver and an adult passenger, both 21-year-old women, were intoxicated, and there was open liquor in the vehicle, police said.

There were three children in the backseat: a six-month-old and two-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. The two-year-old was in an unsafe booster seat and the three-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver was determined to have a blood alcohol concentration of nearly 2.5 times above the legal limit and was arrested, Mounties said.

The woman faces charges of impaired driving, not using a proper child restraining device in a vehicle, holding a Class 1A to 5A licence and driving without an able supervising driver, and unlawfully transporting liquor in a vehicle.

She was released with a court date. RCMP said they have chosen not to publicly identify her to protect the identities of the children involved.

“This could have had a horrible outcome,” Sgt. Chris Lambert of Red River North RCMP said in a statement. “The lives of three young children were endangered, as well as the lives of other innocent people on the roadway.”
