Homicide detectives are investigating after a man died nearly two weeks after being assaulted in the Point Douglas neighbourhood.

On Thursday, the Winnipeg Police Service said officers were called to the 300 block of Princess Street at about 12:30 a.m. April 11, for a report of an injured man.

The officers met with the 25-year-old, before emergency medical personnel transported him to hospital in unstable condition.

WPS spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said the assault did not involve a weapon.

Police said they determined Leo Charles Martin-Shea had been assaulted on the east side of Main Street at Stella Avenue between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. April 8.

WPS spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said the assault did not involve a weapon.

Martin-Shea returned home after the assault, but police and emergency personnel were contacted April 11, as his condition worsened.

He died in hospital Wednesday.

McKinnon said homicide investigators are looking for a single suspect in the assault, but did not reveal further details.

“I think we have to keep it a little closed off right now,” she said. “When we’re still in the process of identifying a suspect, we have to be careful what information we do provide, because suspects do have access to the media… as well.”

Police have asked anyone with information about the assault or video surveillance footage that might help investigators to call homicide detectives at 204-986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-8477.

McKinnon said city police have seen similar circumstances in past investigations, where a victim returned home or did not seek medical attention immediately after an assault.

“I would say it’s uncommon,” McKinnon said of the circumstances of the Martin-Shea’s death. “Uncommon, but not unheard of.”

She pointed to the slaying of Joshua Courchene, 19, who was assaulted Oct. 15, 2022, on the first 100 block of Isabel Street.

Officers found Courchene suffering serious injuries. A suspect on a bicycle nearby was initially charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Courchene was taken to hospital, treated and released. He was found dead at his home Oct. 17.

Homicide detectives upgraded the charge against the suspect to second-degree murder.
