Winnipeggers will be paying less for natural gas in the next few months.

The Public Utilities Board announced Wednesday it had approved a rate decrease for Centra Gas, which means the Manitoba Hydro subsidiary’s customers will see bills decrease by about 9.5 per cent (or an average of $81) per year.

The decrease is due to lower natural gas market prices in North America. The distributor’s rate, which is adjusted each quarter per year, will be reviewed again for Aug. 1.

“Manitoba Hydro earns no profit on the sale of natural gas,” said spokesman Bruce Owen. “The price the utility pays for natural gas is passed directly on to customers with no markup — they pay what we pay.”

Meanwhile, propane gas customers in northern Manitoba will see their bills go up an average of 4.9 per cent (or $82) per year after the PUB approved a rate increase to Stittco Utilities.

The propane company services thousands of customers in Flin Flon and Snow Lake, and supplies the City of Thompson with propane.
