Hey there, time traveller!

The list of candidates seeking to become the next MP for Winnipeg South Centre is taking shape for a spring or summer byelection.

All they need now is for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to make the call and set a date.

The seat has been vacant since Liberal MP Jim Carr, 71, died from cancer Dec. 12.

Carr had been the riding’s representative since the 2015 federal election, winning re-election in 2019 and 2021.

His son, Ben Carr, announced Friday he has been nominated as the Liberal candidate. He confirmed he was acclaimed.

The former school teacher and principal is a vice-president with Indigenous Strategy Alliance, a consulting firm.

Coun. Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry) had announced a run for the Liberal nomination, but withdrew in February.

Damir Stipanovic, who has had a career in air traffic control with NavCanada and the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve, is the Conservative Party of Canada candidate.

In February, the NDP nominated Julia Riddell, a clinical psychologist and University of Manitoba assistant professor in clinical health psychology.

The Green Party of Canada announced earlier this week its candidate will be educator Doug Hemmerling.

Riddell and Hemmerling ran against Jim Carr in the 2019 election.

The date for the Winnipeg South Centre byelection must be announced before June 11.

The campaign must be at least 36 days, but no more than 50 days, said Elections Canada.

With a population of almost 95,000, Winnipeg South Centre includes the areas of River Heights, Tuxedo, Linden Woods, Fort Garry and Osborne Village.

A federal byelection must also be called for Portage—Lisgar, following the February resignation of Conservative MP Candice Bergen.

The date must be announced before Aug. 27.

In March, Bergen was announced as co-chairwoman of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba election campaign.

The provincial election must be held no later than Oct. 3.
