Veteran Winnipeg Jets forward Blake Wheeler is the team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The annual honour is given to the NHL player “who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”

The 32 finalists were selected by their respective NHL teams.

Veteran Winnipeg Jets forward Blake Wheeler is the team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The winner will be chosen by a committee of senior NHL executives looking at criteria that includes “clear and measurable positive impact on the community, investment of time and resources, commitment to a particular cause or community, commitment to the league’s community initiatives, creativity of programming and use of influence; engagement of others.”

The first-place finisher will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice. The two runners-up each will receive a $5,000 donation towards a designated cause.

Wheeler, 36, just finished up his 12th season in Winnipeg after coming over with the organization from Atlanta. The former captain is heading into the final year of his contract, with much speculation about his future.
