The Premier Hockey Federation’s best goaltender has a new home.

Corinne Schroeder, the 23-year-old Elm Creek product who took the PHF by storm as a rookie in 2022-23 with the Boston Pride, has signed a one-year contract to join the Montreal Force.

Further details of the deal were not disclosed, but Schroeder, who had a productive four-year NCAA career with Boston University and a fifth season with Quinnipiac University before turning pro, was a free agent and considered an offer to return to the Pride as well as two other PHF clubs.

“There’s a lot that went into it obviously,” Schroeder said Wednesday from Elm Creek. “I’m sad to be leaving Boston… I’ve been out here for a while but I think one major piece for me was being back in Canada. I haven’t played for a Canadian team since high school (at Balmoral Hall) and being a little closer to home was a big part of my decision. I’m very excited to be in Montreal. I think it’s a great city.”

Schroeder earned league rookie-of-the-year and goaltender-of-the-year honours after setting PHF single-season records with 19 wins and seven shutouts.

She also led all puckstoppers with a goals-against-average of 1.67 and a save percentage of .955 in 22 starts for the first-place Pride. Schroeder was also a finalist for league most valuable player and most outstanding player awards.

“I was very happily surprised that she was interested to come to Montreal, and when that interest was manifested we started the process to bring her here,” said Force president and general manager Kevin Raphaël. “We want to win and I want to bring the best in the players available.

“She’s obviously the best goalie in the PHF and she’s the best player in the PHF. And goalie-wise, I think she’s in a top three or top five in the world.”

The Force, which finished sixth in the seven-team league, wants to improve on the 8-14-2 record it posted during its expansion season.

“We had 13 one-goal games during the season and that’s more than half of the season that was settled on one-goal games, so I think we did fairly good for our first season,” said Raphaël. “And now I want to send a message to the whole league that we ain’t playing around.”

In addition to Schroeder, the club also announced the signing of ex-Pride forward Élizabeth Giguère.

“I don’t think they’re trying to completely revamp their team — just add to it and try and build on their first season,” said Schroeder. “They had a great year with what they had put together very quickly last season. I think there’s a good set up and they’re prepared and ready to be a real contender.”
