A 63-year-old man is in stable condition after a random, unprovoked stabbing by an attacker who climbed into his home through a window early Saturday morning, police say.
Police have arrested a 17-year-old male teen in connection with the assault.
In a news release Sunday, Winnipeg police said they were called to a multi-room residence in the 100 block of Keewatin Street at 4:20 a.m. Saturday for a report of a stabbing.
On scene, officers found the victim with upper-body injuries. The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.
Police, assisted by the canine unit, found the suspect nearby and arrested him without incident. The teen had a “sharp-edged weapon” and a small amount of methamphetamine on him, police say.
Police later learned the suspect entered the victim’s residence through a window “before stabbing him in an unprovoked manner.” The suspect then fled.
“The suspect and victim are previously unknown to one another, and officers believe the incident to be random,” read the release.
The 17-year-old from Winnipeg faces charges of aggravated assault, break and enter, carrying a concealed weapon, posession of a weapon and possession of methamphetamine.
He was released on an undertaking and issued an appearance notice.
