Two Free Press photographers are among the finalists for a nationwide award honouring excellence in photojournalism.
The News Photographers Association of Canada’s 2022 Pictures of the Year Awards recognized the work of Jessica Lee and Mikaela MacKenzie among 42 other nominations.
Lee is a finalist in the portrait category for her photo of residential and day school survivor Charlie Bittern at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

MacKenzie is a finalist in the single multimedia category for her video on Winnipeg Anishinaabe artist Jordan Stranger discussing his work.
“The Free Press prides itself on being one of the last newsrooms in the country to have a team of photojournalists on staff, and these nominations speak to the value of that investment,” Free Press editor Paul Samyn said. “I’m delighted Mikaela and Jessica have been nominated for these awards.”
Earlier this year, Free Press photographer Mike Deal was nominated for a 2022 National Newspaper Award.
The NPAC winners will be announced Sunday.
