A 14-year-old boy has been charged with stabbing a teenage girl early Friday.
Winnipeg police were sent to the area of Sargent Avenue and Toronto Street at about 1 a.m.
Police said a group of youths who know each other were socializing when a “confrontation” erupted. Bear spray was used, and the victim, a 17-year-old girl, was slashed with a machete. Everyone fled except the victim.

Officers found the girl outside, suffering from “severe injuries.” She was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable.
Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said Friday afternoon that although bear spray was used in the incident, the victim was injured only by the machete. The spokesman said police believe the 14-year-old wielded both weapons in the attack.
A suspect was later arrested in the Spence neighbourhood, the WPS said.
Investigators later linked the boy to an unrelated robbery in Fort Garry on Wednesday.
Two boys, both 14, were robbed at knifepoint at about 8:25 p.m. The suspects fled the area, and the victims ran away. Investigators are still looking for other suspects thought to be involved.
The 14-year-old boy arrested Friday has been charged with aggravated assault, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon and two counts of robbery. He remains in custody.
The WPS major crimes unit is still investigating both incidents and is asking anyone with information regarding either one to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
