A long feature detailing the struggles facing Peguis First Nation residents following last year’s historic flood has won a silver medal in the Best Feature category of the Canadian Digital Publishing Awards.
Winnipeg writer Julia-Simone Rutgers’ story, which was published last July, explored the human scars left in the wake of a one-in-200-year flood, and detailed how the trauma has flowed through generations.
Peguis has experienced five major floods in the past 20 years, resulting in long-term physical damage to infrastructure and lengthy emotional upheaval for residents, while calls for permanent upgrades have been largely ignored by governments.
Rutgers writes jointly for the Free Press and The Narwhal, a digital investigative magazine, focusing on climate change and environmental issues. The position is funded by the Winnipeg Foundation.
