Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 18/06/2023 (1021 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Oak Bluff’s Tyler Mislawchuk reasserted himself as a threat for the Olympic gold in 2024 with a podium finish at the World Triathlon Cup in Huatulco, Mexico on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old sprinted to the silver medal for the second consecutive year after winning the event two times previously.
The two-time Olympian emerged from the water from the 750-metre swim in top spot and stayed with the lead group during the 20-kilometre bike course before engaging in a thrilling battle with Spain’s David Castro and Mexico’s Aram Penaflor for gold.

“Anytime you are on the podium it is nice,” Mislawchuk told Triathlon Canada. “I was a few metres short — you always want to win those races, but you can’t complain.”
The threesome ran together for most of the five-kilometre final leg with Castro nipping Mislawchuk at the finish line. The Spaniard clocked a winning time of 54:14, one second ahead of Mislawchuk.
Penaflor earned bronze in 54:18.
“I think I could have run a bit faster, but it was a bit of cat and mouse the whole run,” added Mislawchuk. “I didn’t want to lead and be the idiot that got passed in the end. I lost anyways, but I gave it my best shot.
“(David Castro) is one of the best finishers in the world. He smoked the field two weekends ago at European Championships so it’s nice to be in that company. I know he is in good form. It’s definitely a good sign for me heading into next weekend.”
Brock Hoel, of West Kelowna, B.C., finished 12th spot in 54:57. Martin Sobey, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., was 14th at 55:05, while Filip Mainville of Laval, Que., was 20th in 55:32.
Mislawchuk can now focus on the World Triathlon Cup tour’s next stop on home soil — June 24 and 25 in Montreal.
“One race at a time, I climbed a few spots today,” said Mislawchuk. “Not many believers in the Tyler camp these days, a lot of people have given up on me but the ones who are around, that’s a nice one for them.
“Next week is Montreal, it’s a big race at home and you want to perform.”
