New fines for people who drive on roads closed to traffic are on the horizon.
Amendments to Manitoba’s Highway Traffic Act (under Bill 46) will come into effect Saturday, and introduce a range of fines and demerits for those who drive on road closed to the public.
For the infraction, drivers of cars and other light vehicles will get a $298 fine and drivers of heavy vehicles will get a $672 fine. There are also fines in place for directing an employee to drive a vehicle on a closed road: $672 for a light vehicle and $1,296 for a heavy one.

The ticket will also cost the driver two demerits on their licence.
“Far too many times, we have seen vehicles ignore the barricades or find ways around them, such as using service roads, and it is very dangerous,” RCMP traffic services officer Insp. Michael Gagliardi said Friday in a statement.
“It has always been illegal to go around a road-closure barricade, but these amendments provide a more effective way for us to enforce this type of offence as it is now a specific charge under the Highway Traffic Act.”
In serious cases, police can send the driver to court, where they could be hit with an additional fine of up to $2,000 for light vehicles or $5,000 for heavy vehicles.
Several provinces, including British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan, already have fines in place for drivers who disregard road closures.
