A local crane rental business takes pride in lifting apprentices upwards in their careers.
Schmuland Crane Rentals is a family-run business founded by Darrell and Deborah Schmuland in 2001.
Located off Highway 59 in the RM of St. Clements, the crane rental company currently employs eight staff for hoisting work across Manitoba as well as parts of Saskatchewan and Ontario.

“Our services provide certified operators along with certified cranes ranging from 8.5 tons to 90 tons and beyond, if requested. We practise a comprehensive safety program,” says president Darrell Schmuland, adding that they have safety certifications through the national COR occupational safety and health accreditation program, the ISN safety program and the Avetta contractor compliance safety program.
“Here, at Schmuland Crane Rentals, we pride ourselves in our commitment to delivering professional personalized service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We strongly believe that safety and happiness of our customers and employees are our No. 1 priority. We are committed to maintaining our fleet and equipment to the highest of standards.”
As a small business in the construction industry, Schmuland Crane Rentals has been able to receive assistance through the Take on the Trades- Apprenticeship Support Project from First Peoples Development Inc. (FPDI).
“Our company is looking to expand and grow our operation and would like to bring more hands into the crane operation trade. We are wanting to hire and retain talented apprentices that will move our business forward. Hiring apprentices is beneficial for the company, as we can provide training on the way we operate and the unique, specialized skills that best serve our company,” Schmuland says.
“The apprentice becomes a journeyman with better safety performance and greater overall productivity. It ensures that apprentices are trained to the provincial and industry standards and provides a relationship built on growth and development, thus resulting in a stable workforce and helping maintain talent.”
The company provides experienced journeyman operators to mentor new apprentices and help them reach their full potential on their path to become Red Seal operators.
“This teaches them the right skills and applications to succeed, as well as in-depth understanding of crane operating,” Schmuland says.
“It can also provide invaluable exposure to how things get done in the construction industry.”
Schmuland Crane Rentals aims to support people launching their careers, such as Steve Lowing, a first-level apprentice that the company hired through FPDI’s Take on the Trades-Apprenticeship Support Project.
“In the past, we have assisted two other crane operator apprentices and have found it to be beneficial in growing our team of professionals,” Schmuland says.
“We provide apprentices the hands-on work experience they need for a career as a crane operator.”
The company also supports equitable employment and promotes the representation of equity-deserving groups.
“It is the policy of Schmuland Crane Rentals to provide and maintain a safe and healthy working environment for all employees,” he says.
“Management provides all mechanical physical facilities required for personal safety and health in keeping with the highest standards. To ensure that all employees perform their work safely and efficiently, we provide information, training, instruction and supervision.”
