Wanted: thoughtful and friendly people with open minds.
Klinic Community Health on Sherbrook Street, which provides a range of services from medical care to counselling and education, is searching for volunteers to welcome visitors.
Volunteer co-ordinator Curt Sparkes says he looks for kind, warm, non-judgmental people who are open to learning and comfortable asking for help when they need it.

“You don’t need any formal education or past experience,” he says. “You just need to be flexible and curious and grounded.”
Rooted in social justice values, Klinic promotes health and quality of life for people of every age, background, ethnicity, gender identity and socio-economic circumstance.
Klinic stands for pro-choice, anti-oppressive, feminist and trauma-informed values, and so do the organization’s volunteers.
“We need them to project those values of openness and acceptance and celebrating diversity,” Sparkes says.

Klinic offers a number of services, including a transgender health clinic, drop-in sexually transmitted infection clinic, trauma therapy and counselling for people who have experienced family violence.
With all of these services, Sparkes says, there is the potential for people to show up nervous or anxious; some may feel shame.
“That’s a big opportunity I see for the welcome volunteers,” he says. “The welcome volunteer can look them in the eye, greet them and make them feel recognized and supported and welcomed into our space.”
Bev Duthoit says becoming a welcome volunteer has been a good way to meet people while working alongside a great team of professionals.
“I enjoy learning about the social issues in our city and what’s out there to help people,” Duthoit says. “There’s so much need in our city and Klinic has so much to offer.”
The 62-year-old St. Boniface resident retired in 2017 after a three-decade career with MTS. She signed up to volunteer in April 2022 because she was tired of sitting at home during the pandemic.
“I did a little bit of research on their organization and I really liked that they are involved with helping different community members,” Duthoit says. “It all seemed to me like a positive environment, plus it was something different for me.”
By volunteering at Klinic, Duthoit says she has come to understand she grew up with privilege and has gained insight into some of the challenges faced by some Winnipeggers.
“There’s not a shift that goes by where I don’t learn something new,” says the grandmother of two. “I can’t say enough positive things about how Klinic is organized and the services they provide.”
Since welcome volunteers are the first people visitors meet when they arrive at Klinic, English language skills and communications skills are especially important, Sparkes says.
Extra languages and knowledge of different cultures is an asset, as well as experience living in West Broadway.
Welcome volunteers spend a lot of time on their feet, and should be comfortable approaching and speaking to new people.
Sparkes invites people who are interested in being welcome volunteers to email volunteerintake@klinic.mb.ca, phone 204-784-4006, apply in person at 167 Sherbrook St., or fill out an application at klinic.mb.ca/welcome-volunteers.
If you know a special volunteer, please contact aaron.epp@gmail.com.
