A bout of heavy rainfall Tuesday morning that pummelled parts of Winnipeg brought as much as 15 millimetres and forced Tinkertown Amusements to close for the day.

When staff arrived at the southeast city-area business location, they discovered the grounds had flooded. Amusement park management posted photos on Facebook, but did not respond to an interview request from the Free Press.

Tinkertown’s voicemail greeting stated it would be closed Tuesday due to weather and planned to reopen Wednesday at noon.

Environment and Climate Change Canada characterizes heavy rain as seven mm or more of rain per hour.

Samantha Mauti, a meteorologist with the national service, said central and eastern Winnipeg received 10 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, while western Winnipeg got five to 15 mm.

Per the weather data from the Winnipeg airport, no hail was reported. The morning thunderstorm was associated with a cold front, she said.

While Mauti did not yet have rainfall data for the Rural Municipality of Springfield — Tinkertown is located inside its border — nearby Dugald had received 10 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

“With the nature of showers and thunderstorms, it’s possible that areas are going to get higher amounts,” Mauti said.
