Homicide detectives put out a plea for information on Friday in two unsolved Winnipeg slayings.

Sunday will mark a year since Sydney Frederick Chubb, 28, was found severely injured on the southeast sidewalk of the Osborne Street Bridge.

It was about 5:30 a.m. Aug. 13, 2022 when police were called to the sidewalk, where they found him with “severe trauma” to his upper body. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died eight days later.

Police are looking for information on Chubb’s whereabouts, including who he was with, prior to the assault.

Meantime, Wednesday marked three years since Anthony Evaristo Gonzales, 30, was “grievously assaulted” by a group of people outside an establishment on the 1400 block of St. Matthews Avenue, police said.

On Aug 9, 2020, police were called to the scene at about 1:20 a.m. Gonzales died of his injuries.

Police said homicide detectives believe numerous people witnessed the attack and might have valuable information on the beating death.

“The reality is, and the belief is, there are people who do have information and they know what happened to Sydney, and they know what happened to Anthony, and we’re just hoping somebody will come forward,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon.

“The homicide unit doesn’t stop working on these cases, they continue to investigate, they continue to go down different avenues, but it’s always helpful to get the public’s input.”

McKinnon said the families of the victims deserve to know what happened.

“It’s very important for the families to have closure, and to have peace and be able to take that next step in their grieving process,” she said.

The WPS asked anyone with tips on either slaying to call homicide detectives at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.
