A Niagara Falls man is facing charges after he allegedly held a woman against her will while driving near Neepawa.

The Niagara Regional Police Service asked Spruce Plains RCMP to stop a vehicle while it was travelling westbound on Highway 16, approximately 10 kilometres east of Neepawa, at about 10:55 a.m. Sunday.

RCMP were told the 48-year-old passenger, a Niagara Falls woman, was possibly being held against her will by the 45-year-old male driver and might have been assaulted.

RCMP officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it, but the driver sped away, Mounties said.

The vehicle went over a spike belt east of Neepawa and continued driving. It was eventually forced to come to a stop on a nearby residential street.

Mounties said the passenger, who was not injured, waited for police at the scene, but the driver fled the scene on foot. Police found about 4,800 unmarked cigarettes while searching the vehicle.

Officers, including a canine unit, searched for the man but did not find him.

The Brandon Police Service was told Monday evening that the suspect was staying in a motel in the 1800 block of 1st Street North in Brandon. Brandon police arrested a man in one of the rooms.

He is facing charges of dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, flight from police and forcible confinement.
