Pair of Canadians atop jam-packed Manitoba Open leaderboard

A pair of Canadians had a super Saturday at Southwood Golf and Country Club to climb atop the leaderboard at the Manitoba Open.

Johnny Travale of Stoney Creek, Ont., and Joey Savoie of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., fired identical scores of 5-under 67 to pull into a tie for first with Hayden Springer of Texas.

Each pro is at -15 heading into the final round Sunday.

Springer had a three-stroke lead to begin the day.

A Canadian hasn’t claimed the Open title since Graham DeLaet did it in 2009.

Hot on the heels of the leaders is Sam Choi of Seoul, South Korea, who went low on Day 3, shooting a 9-under 63 to climb to within a stroke.

Charles Wang of Beijing and Étienne Papineau of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu are two shots back at -13.

Just five shots separate the top 17 golfers heading into the final round.

Travis Fredborg, the lone Manitoba product left in the field, carded a 1-over 73 on Saturday and is -2 for the tournament.

The 27-year-old from Selkirk was a central figure this week at Southwood. On Friday, he drained a short birdie putt to make the cut and, in the process, dropped two dozen other players out of the tournament.

The top 6o and ties make the cut in any tournament. Had Fredbord made only a par, another 24 pros would have played the weekend.

Sudarshan Yellamaraju, who was born in India and immigrated to Winnipeg with his family at a young age before ultimately moving to Ontario, fired a 2-under 70 on Saturday and is -6 after 54 holes.

Manitoba Amateur champion Braxton Kuntz and fellow Winnipegger Ryan McMillan missed the cut.
