Two men and one woman were victims of random attacks by a single suspect during a 40-minute period Monday in downtown Winnipeg, police say.
All of the assaults were believed to be unprovoked and none of the victims knew the suspect, city police said Tuesday.
“It is definitely concerning,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy. “Whether it is substance abuse or mental health, it is always a concern for us when three people are attacked randomly and unprovoked… It didn’t happen in the middle of the night, it happened in broad daylight.”
A 68-year-old man suffered upper-body injuries after being stabbed on the 200 block of Hargrave Street at about 11:30 a.m. The victim did not seek treatment for his injuries.
Fifteen minutes later, a 39-year-old man was found with upper-body injuries after being stabbed and assaulted. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.
At about 12:10 p.m., members of the WPS tactical support team were travelling southbound on Israel Asper Way when they were flagged down by security officers. A 48-year-old old female security officer said she had been physically assaulted, but not injured, by the suspect they were pursuing.
Police arrested the suspect without incident.
A short time later, however, while in custody, the suspect assaulted a central processing officer, who didn’t need medical treatment, police said.
A 28-year-old man has been charged with several offences, including two counts of assault with a weapon and assaulted a peace officer.
The man has been detained in custody.
