When it comes to his volunteer work, Gary Mcfarlane is a man of few words.

“I still like coming here, so I keep coming,” he says of his involvement at Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape.

It’s been more than 10 years since Mcfarlane started volunteering at the Winnipeg social enterprise, which redistributes gently-used furniture and housewares to people experiencing furniture poverty.

The 65-year-old West End resident is at the charity’s Dufferin Avenue warehouse every Tuesday and Wednesday, cleaning up and helping out wherever he can.

It’s one of the ways he occupies his time now that he’s on long-term disability. An injury Mcfarlane sustained in a major car accident while travelling to Regina in 1990 for the CFL’s Labour Day Classic left him unable to work.

He’s volunteered at a number of places over the years, and he was helping out at Doray Enterprises when he learned about the volunteer opportunity at Oyate Tipi.

“I didn’t know if I’d be staying, but because I like the people here, I did,” he says.

Mcfarlane may not have much to say about his volunteer work, but those around him do.

“He’s really a stable force. He kind of downplays his importance because he’s a humble person, but he’s very important here. We love having him here. It wouldn’t be the same without him.”– Deborah Huff, volunteer co-ordinator at Oyate Tipi

Deborah Huff, volunteer co-ordinator at Oyate Tipi, describes him as kind and caring.

“He’s really a stable force,” she says. “He kind of downplays his importance because he’s a humble person, but he’s very important here. We love having him here. It wouldn’t be the same without him.”

Oyate Tipi envisions a community that values and exemplifies generosity; sharing between those who have and those who require; fostering greater independence and self-sufficiency, dignity and optimism; and showing care for families, community and the Earth.

Volunteers are integral to that vision, Huff said.

“There’s such a rich array of people in the North End, and it’s nice to be able to meet the community and have the community volunteering as well,” she says.

The charity currently relies on about 20 volunteers, and Huff is recruiting more.

She is looking for people to help with furniture repair, social media, cleaning and maintenance, and those who can greet community members and assist them in the showroom.

“You name something we need help with and we need a volunteer for it, right down to the laundry,” Huff says.

Anyone interested can email volunteer@oyatetipi.com, phone 204-589-2218 or fill out an online application at oyatetipi.com/volunteer. People are also invited to apply in person at 429 Dufferin Ave.

The organization is committed to creating volunteer opportunities for people struggling to find work, training for careers in social work and interested in making a difference in the community.

Huff encourages people from all walks of life and of all abilities to apply.

“We don’t care what a person’s background is,” she says. “Anyone and everyone is welcome.”

If you sign up, it’s likely you’ll meet Mcfarlane. In addition to helping out at the warehouse, the passionate Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Jets fan enjoys visiting with fellow volunteers and staff over coffee and doughnuts.

“I don’t like sitting around doing nothing,” he says. “I just keep volunteering.”
