A pair of teenage boys are accused of wielding machetes while attacking three people in Portage la Prairie in broad daylight Sunday.
Portage RCMP were sent to the back lane of 1st Street Southwest in the small city west of Winnipeg at about 4:50 p.m. Sunday, where they found a 21-year-old man from Long Plain First Nation suffering serious injuries inflicted with a blade, Mounties said Wednesday.
The man was rushed to hospital. As RCMP were responding to the first assault, a call about another victim came into the detachment.
A 15-year-old boy was walking home in the area when two male youths carrying machetes attacked and tried to rob him of his belongings, RCMP said.
He was taken to the hospital in Portage for treatment, and Mounties went to another call. A 14-year-old boy had been attacked at around the same time as the other victims and went to the local hospital by himself to get help, where staff members called for Mounties, RCMP said.
Officers identified and arrested two suspects. The boys, ages 13 and 14, are both Portage residents.
The 13-year-old has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery with a weapon and assault with a weapon.
The 14-year-old has been aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery, assault with a weapon and failing to comply with release and probation orders.
The teens remain in custody, Mounties said.
