Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews rushed one person to hospital in unstable condition after a fire in a West End apartment building Thursday night left more than two dozen more temporarily homeless.
Firefighters were sent to the three-storey building at 583 Furby St. at 8:21 p.m., where they found smoke billowing from the apartment, WFPS said Friday.
Crews got the fire under control by about 9 p.m.

Most of the building’s residents got out before crews arrived. Paramedics assessed several residents at the scene and sent one to hospital.
The building’s approximately 28 residents weren’t able to return to their suites because the apartment block was extensively damaged by smoke and water, the WFPS said. The City of Winnipeg’s emergency social services team helped find them a place to stay.
The fire service said the cause of the blaze and the estimated cost of the damage are not yet known.
The apartment block, just south of Sargent Avenue, has been the site of significant violence in recent years.
On Aug. 26, a 38-year-old man was shot and killed inside the building.
In May, a 31-year-old was found in a hallway suffering from stab wounds.

In December 2022, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed within 583 Furby St.
Some West End residents took to calling the building “murder mansion,” one long-time nearby resident recently told the Free Press.
