Some Manitoba residents are being asked to keep their eyes open for a wild pig on the loose.

Squeal on Pigs Manitoba, an organization dedicated to tracking down members of an invasive species, are on the lookout for an ornery varmint in rural southwestern Manitoba. Squeal on Pigs is circulating a wanted poster on social media depicting a large wild pig known to travel in and around Wawanesa and Alexander.

The poster states that the program will provide landowners with cell cameras, bait and corral traps to aid in the effort to capture this pig, identified as a male, and any others that might be lurking in the wild.

“Wild pigs pose a threat to livestock and spread disease,” the poster states. “This is an aggressive wild pig, travelling mainly in daylight — please keep an eye out and do not approach.”

In an interview about the program with the Brandon Sun in May 2022, former Keystone Agricultural Producers president Bill Campbell said wild pigs can carry diseases like porcine epidemic diarrhea and African swine fever, which put domestic pigs at risk on top of damage they can cause to the ecosystem.

However, the latter disease has yet to be discovered in Manitoba.

A map of reported sightings posted to the campaign’s website in September listed multiple sightings of wild pigs to the near south and east of Brandon within the last 12 months.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of wild pigs, including signs of possible rooting, sightings or trail camera photos, are asked to visit squealonpigsmb.org or call 1-833-SPOT-PIG.
