A Transcona high school is assuring families it is taking steps to protect students after being alerted to a threat that was posted to an online forum.
On Monday, the principal of Murdoch MacKay Collegiate wrote a mass email to community members to inform them city police contacted administration about “a concerning message that was posted about our school on an image board website.”
The threatening message referenced Tuesday, the high school and the use of a firearm.
“Classes will proceed as scheduled on Tuesday 31 October 2023 with all exterior doors to the school locked and monitored by staff and (Winnipeg Police Service) school resource officers,” principal Brian Straub wrote in the Oct. 30 letter obtained by the Free Press.
Straub said police are investigating the incident and collaborating with employees in the River East Transcona School Division to address the safety of the school community.
Students will only be able to enter the school at 260 Redonda St. through two sets of designated doors. In-school extracurricular activities have been cancelled for the day.
The school leader noted the post was removed shortly after it was made.
