THE NDP government has appointed a popular former mayor to run a regional cabinet office in the Pembina Valley — an area where the party doesn’t have an elected representative.

Brandon Burley, the former mayor of Morden, will be the government’s liaison with business, community organizations and families, the government said Wednesday in a release.

Premier Wab Kinew made the announcement at a gala dinner involving members of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, who are meeting in Brandon this week.

Brandon Burley, the former mayor of Morden, will be the government’s liaison with business, community organizations and families.

“Our message to Manitobans is clear – no matter what part of the province you are from, we are here to represent you, listen to your needs and work with your communities to improve health care, grow the economy, and make life better for Manitobans,” the premier said in the release.

“This is an important step in making sure Manitobans in the southern region have a strong partner in the provincial government.”

Burley was mayor of Morden from 2018 to 2023, including during the turbulent time of the pandemic. During his tenure, he was director of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

“I am grateful to Premier Kinew for the opportunity to work on behalf of his government in southern Manitoba,” said Burley, in a release.

“I will work hard to fairly represent all of southern Manitoba to the premier’s office, as he seeks to build a government for every Manitoban.”

Since being elected Oct. 3, the NDP has established a regional cabinet office for western Manitoba, in Brandon.
