A Manitoba doctor convicted this week of sexually assaulting five patients will be allowed to remain free on bail until he is sentenced.

On Tuesday, a judge found Arcel Bissonnette guilty of sexually five women between 2001 and 2017 during medical examinations at the Ste. Anne Hospital and Seine Medical Centre.

Following his conviction, prosecutors immediately moved to have his bail revoked, arguing his continued freedom would bring the justice system into disrepute.

Earlier this week a judge found Arcel Bissonnette guilty of sexually five women between 2001 and 2017.

Bissonnette has been on bail for more than two years, has faced no allegation he has breached conditions of his release, no longer practises medicine and has surrendered his passport, King’s Bench Justice Sadie Bond said Friday.

“While there is no longer the presumption of innocence in his favour… that does not mean that detention is automatic,” Bond said.

“Although a lengthy sentence will be sought, this is not a sentencing hearing at this stage,” she said. “Despite the serious offence and the serious circumstances of this matter, overall I find detention is not necessary to maintain confidence in the administration of justice.”

A sentencing date has not been set.

A trial involving six alleged victims late last year ended with all charges being stayed after prosecutors said late disclosure in the case left them with no reasonable likelihood of a conviction.

A third trial involving 10 alleged victims is set for February.
