If you struggle with wrapping gifts or you just want to support a good cause, the Manitoba chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada is here for you this holiday season.

The chapter’s sixth annual Wrapping for a Cure fundraiser kicked off Dec. 1 at Kildonan Place mall. Shoppers can bring their gifts to the booth across from Shoppers Drug Mart until Christmas Eve, where a volunteer will wrap them in exchange for a donation.

Volunteers are also running a coat check, for a suggested donation of $2 per coat.

‘Volunteering’s just in my blood,’ says Wrapping for a Cure’s Mandi Machado (left). For Tara Vosbourgh, joining Machado at Kildonan Place, it’s for the joy of it and in support of her husband.

Last year, volunteers wrapped just shy of 2,000 gifts and raised $13,000.

This year’s goal is to raise $15,000, says Mandi Machado, who co-chairs the initiative with her mother, Mary. “The event as a whole is always meaningful.”

About 150 Manitobans live with cystic fibrosis, a progressive genetic disease with no known cure that damages the respiratory and digestive system.

The money raised by Wrapping for a Cure stays in the province, where it helps fund research and treatment.

Machado got involved with the Manitoba chapter seven or eight years ago, when a family friend reached out to her looking for volunteers.

“It was a no-brainer for me to jump in,” she says. “Volunteering’s just in my blood… My parents always instilled this idea that when you can’t give financially, you can always give your time — and that can be just as important, if not more important.”

For Tara Vosbourgh, one of the best parts of Wrapping for a Cure is getting things just right for shoppers.

“It’s nice seeing folks get their gift back and being wowed by what our wrappers can do for them,” she says. “I love that.”

Vosbourgh got involved with the Manitoba chapter about 10 years ago, and is glad to help Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Her husband, Jeremy, lives with the disease.

“Being able to do something that helps with that is awesome,” she says. “We’ve seen a lot of the benefits, especially with the newer drugs that have come out.”

Vosbourgh and her husband organize Sink It for CF, a fundraising golf tournament held each June at Maplewood Golf Club in St. Pierre-Jolys.

The tournament has raised more than $26,000 since the inaugural event in 2018.

“We have seen within my family the benefits of everything that Cystic Fibrosis Canada does,” Vosbourgh says. “I’m not in a position to give a ton of money myself, but I have the time and if my time can translate into money coming in for Cystic Fibrosis Canada, that’s really important to me.”

All of the volunteer slots at Wrapping for a Cure are currently full, but Machado invites anyone who is interested in getting involved to sign up at wfp.to/6Na in case of an opening.

“I love Christmas, so every year I can be found at the booth, wearing my ridiculous Christmas sweaters and blasting music,” Machado says. “I welcome anyone to come down and say hi.”
