Hey there, time traveller!

Custom orthotics can cost hundreds of dollars, but a Manitoba podiatrist wants to help people achieve better posture and alignment and alleviate hip and back pain for a fraction of the cost. For less than $100, you can reduce stress and strain on your entire body with the ease of slipping into your favourite pair of shoes. Designed by Dr. Lorne Canvin, Bio-Insole is backed by a biomechanical design and provides the support of a custom orthotic without the hefty price tag.

Part of Dr. Canvin’s podiatry education included studying biomechanics and training to assess, create and manufacture orthotics. Then, he started pondering the idea of an insole that provided an affordable alternative for everyday use. Later in his career, Dr. Canvin worked with the military, designing custom orthotics for soldiers who spent a lot of time on their feet in boots that weren’t particularly supportive.

“I started developing prototypes. I wanted to provide a product superior to anything else on the market. Something that provides correction, support, and alignment,” Dr. Canvin explains. “I call it comfort and correction without compromise.”

The Bio-Insole has a top cover material that helps circulate air around the foot and contains nano-bio-charcoal to fight against fungus, bacteria, and odour. It also boasts a combination of natural cork and virgin polyurethane foam, making the Bio-Insole durable and comfortable. However, the science behind the Bio-Insole’s unrivalled support comes from ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA), a dense foam that makes up the most critical parts of the insole.

The three main components of Bio-Insole were each designed with a specified durometer – or measure of hardness or load that the material will support. The bed of the insole is the hardest; the orange cobra pad, which provides corrective support for the heel, is slightly softer, and the most malleable portion is the yellow area that cushions the metatarsal area of the foot.

“It goes from stiff to soft to softer. It’s proven very effective – nothing but positive feedback from the various people who have tried it,” says Dr. Canvin. “It’s been very effective because of the correction. It not only aligns but also reduces plantar pressure. It can help with lower back pain and straighten your overall posture. We’re providing, in essence, a new foundation.”

Dr. Canvin says that anyone can benefit from his insoles, whether you currently have symptoms or not. For those seeking relief from foot pain, the Bio-Insole can provide corrective support. For those who spend a lot of time on their feet, such as people in construction, the military, police service, firefighters, or athletes, it can be a preventative measure to keep future pain at bay. You need a shoe from which you can remove the factory insole, one that is deep enough to accommodate Bio-Insole. Due to the corrective nature of the product, it is recommended to break in the Bio-Insole over time so that foot and leg muscles can adjust to new movements.

“It’s a different concept [from] what’s out there currently. They provide support, perhaps, but they don’t provide correction. What I always wanted to achieve with this product was to provide people with comfort and provide their feet with some alignment. It’s not a gimmicky thing. My knowledge of biomechanics is based on science, and I’ve tested it for several years,” says Dr. Canvin.

“That’s my name on it. I’m standing behind it. In my office last week, I had a fellow who was in there who had bought a pair of the Bio-Insoles and was raving about them. And then there’s another chap who heard and was starting to look at them on the rack. And the guy raving about them, [said] ‘Don’t even hesitate, just buy them.'”

Dr. Canvin hopes that insurance plans will cover the cost of Bio-Insoles. If you’d like to see the Bio-Insole in person, you can find them in Dr. Canvin’s Selkirk, Manitoba office at Meridian Chiropractic + Health Centre at 208 Main Street 204-482-4464. Or purchase online by searching Bio-Insole on Amazon.ca.
