Freshman outside hitter Luke Lodewyks pounded out a team-high seven kills and added four digs in his first career start to lead the University of Winnipeg men’s volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 27-25) victory over the Dalhousie Tigers in the final game of the 56th annual Wesmen Classic at the Duckworth Centre.
Fellow starter Nigel Nielsen added six kills for the Wesmen, who were the only unbeaten team with a 4-0 record and were declared the tournament champions.
No. 5-ranked Winnipeg put on a balanced attack with Jaxon Rose adding five kills and eight digs and Isaiah Olfert chipping in with four kills.
Wesmen middle Ethan Duncan was honoured as tournament MVP while teammate Liam Kristjanson earned an all-star nod.
“The main key for us is finding a way to really play at our top level,” said Kristjanson, a right side who had three kills Saturday. “I think this tournament gave us an opportunity to go out and rehearse that, try to play consistently well across four games. I thought we achieved that pretty well.”
Dillan Morphet nine kills to lead Dalhousie while teammate Justin Cross, a Winnipegger, added six kills. Cross was also named an all-star.
The Wesmen made frequent use of their reserve players during the course of the tournament.
“It’s very rewarding to see the guys who put in a lot of work and don’t get a lot of opportunity in the spotlight… to see them out there and have their shot and do well with it,” said Kristjanson. “All the guys that got in I thought did an excellent job… It’s going to be a long season. We play six weeks straight in the second half and there’s going to be injuries and (absences) and the more we can develop that depth, the better it’s going to be for us.”
Earlier in the day, the Manitoba Bisons swept Laval Rouge et Or 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record. Laval dropped to 1-3.
Meanwhile, the Brandon Bobcats completed their tournament play with a 2-2 record after losing 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-19) to the New Brunswick Reds. The Reds won the East Pool with a 3-1 mark.
Elsewhere, the Guelph Gryphons ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22) triumph over the UBC Okanagan Heat. Guelph finished 1-3 while the Heat went 0-4.
Also named to the tournament all-star team were: Brandon middle Philipp Lauter; New Brunswick setter Nick Glynn, Manitoba left side Ben Carleton and Bisons libero Bryce Cancilla.
