An elderly woman has died after being struck by a driver outside Kildonan Place Mall Friday.

A duty officer with the Winnipeg Police Service confirmed that a collision occurred near the intersection of Reenders Drive and Stapon Road shortly after 4 p.m.

“An elderly victim was located, critically injured, transported critical and succumbed to her injuries,” the police spokesman told the Free Press.

Cynthia Sigurdson was en route home after doing errands when she came across the scene on Reenders Drive during rush-hour traffic in the freezing rain.

“I held her hand for a few moments; I didn’t know what to do or how-to help,” she said, recalling the moment she pulled over to assist another woman who was comforting the senior who had been injured and was already talking to a 911 operator.

Sigurdson said she put a jacket on the victim before another individual stopped to deliver a blanket as observers waited for emergency responders.

“It seemed like it took forever for the emergency vehicles to come,” she added.

Multiple witnesses described vehicle-related debris scattered across the street, although they were unclear about which collision caused the mess.

Sources said the woman who died was involved in an earlier collision between two vehicles and had exited her car to exchange information with another motorist when a truck driver hit her while she was on foot.

A police investigation is ongoing.
