The province’s police watchdog is investigating after an assault suspect broke his ankle when “making contact” with a Winnipeg police cruiser.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba’s civilian director says it is in the public interest to investigate the Jan. 26 incident.

The IIU said in a statement Monday that Winnipeg police officers were headed to the 2300 block of McPhillips Street at about 6 p.m., after being called about a robbery with a weapon.

The IIU said a man entered a taxi, assaulted the driver and forced him out of the vehicle. Police confirmed Sunday the man was wielding an axe.

The victim was treated in hospital and was listed in stable condition.

When police arrived, officers ordered the suspect out of the cab, but the man fled across the parking lot until making contact with an arriving second police cruiser. It was not clear if the cruiser struck the suspect or if he ran into the vehicle.

The suspect was taken to the Health Sciences Centre. where it was confirmed he had suffered a broken ankle.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with two counts of robbery and a single charge of assault with a weapon.

Anyone with any information or video footage of the incident is asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
