It’s official: diverse cultural greetings are not coming to an electronic bus sign near you.

On Tuesday, city council’s public works committee cast a final vote in favour of a Winnipeg Transit recommendation to eliminate all promotional messages on the service’s digital signs, denying a request to instead note a diverse set of holidays and events on the displays.

Transit said the extra information delays route and location information from being displayed, which can frustrate customers trying to make split-second decisions about which bus to take.

City council’s public works committee cast a final vote in favour of a Winnipeg Transit recommendation to eliminate all promotional messages on the service’s digital signs. The extra information delays route and location information from being displayed.

The service said the issue has triggered complaints in the past, when its signs were infrequently used to honour a few special events and sports teams.

Supporters of using the space for diverse cultural greetings had suggested the change could promote inclusion.
