Shawn Maranan scored 19 points and dished out nine assists to lead the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen to an 85-76 triumph over the Regina Cougars in Canada West men’s basketball action Saturday night.
The win, which improved Winnipeg’s record to 15-5, pulled the Wesmen into the third seed for the upcoming conference playoff tournament based on the third-best ratings percentage index of the 12 post-season teams.
Mike Mikhailov added 16 points and eight rebounds for the winners, who got 14 points from Malachi Alexander and 12 more from Alberto Gordo.

Nick Barnard led the Cougars with 19 points. Regina, which fell to 13-7, holds down the sixth seed for the playoffs, slated for Feb. 21-25 at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
In women’s action, Jade Belmore had 20 points to lead Regina past Winnipeg, 63-55.
The Wesmen, 5-15, will miss the Canada West playoffs with a 13th-place finish.
Anna Kernaghan had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists for Winnipeg. Teammate Raia Guinto added 15 points.
At IGAC, Mason Kraus scored 19 points and added seven rebounds and six assists to lead host Manitoba men to a 81-72 triumph over the UBC Okanagan Heat to sweep the two-game weekend series at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Kraus, who had to be helped off the floor with a lower-body injury late in the fourth quarter, went 7-for-11 from the field including 5-for-6 from behind the three-point line.
Daren Watts chipped in with 13 points for the winners, while star forward Simon Hildebrandt was limited to three rebounds and six points.
Manitoba, now 13-7, occupies the fourth seed for the post-season. The Heat dropped to 6-14 and will miss the playoffs.
Hafith Moallin led the Heat with 21 points. Gavin Ashworth added 18 points for the visitors.
In women’s action, host Manitoba lost 85-64 to UBCO.
Jaeli Ibbetson had another big night for the Heat, registering 23 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists and three blocks.
Guard Lauren Bartlett replied with 17 points and five assists for the 6-14 Bisons, who had already clinched the 12th and final berth in the conference post-season tournament.
