Police say a man charged with robbing a store while armed with an airgun placed stolen goods in the backpack of a young boy he was with.

The incident happened at a retail store in the 1100 block of Main Street at about 8:15 p.m. Monday.

The Winnipeg Police Service said Tuesday that the man stole property while in the company of a boy in his care. The suspect allegedly threatened a security officer who tried to intervene and told the guard he had a gun.

The suspect fled on foot after placing stolen property in the child’s backpack, police said.

Police found the pair in a back lane in the 300 block of Boyd Avenue at about 9:35 p.m.

Officers said the man was “immediately unco-operative,” and they used a Taser on him after a short foot pursuit.

Police said they found a CO2-powered handgun and a machete on the man.

The boy, who is under 12 years old, was not injured, police said. A police spokesman said he could not be more specific about the boy’s age or state the relationship between the boy and the man, who know each other.

A 31-year-old Winnipeg man is charged with two counts each of possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, seven counts of failing to comply with a condition of a release order, and single counts of robbery, resisting a peace officer and failing to provide necessities of life to a child.

“The name of the suspect will not be released to protect the identity of the child involved in this matter,” the WPS said in a news release.

The man was detained in custody. Officers turned the child over to his mother.
