Ella Gray supplied a game-high 18 kills and setter Katreena Bentley dished out 48 assists to establish a single-season Canada West record as the University of Manitoba Bisons rolled to a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-11) over the Saskatchewan Huskies in women’s volleyball action at Investors Group Athletic Centre Saturday night.
No. 3-ranked Manitoba completed its regular season with a 20-4 record and clinched second place in the conference behind 22-2 UBC, the top ranked club in U Sports.
Saskatchewan, which had 14 kills from Olivia Mattern, fell to 8-16.
Katreena Bentley finished the regular season with 983 assists, breaking the mark of 942 established by Eryn Orysiuk of the Alberta Pandas in 2017-18.
“We played such a good firm fourth set,” said Bisons head coach Ken Bentley. “We had lots of pop and kept hitting the ball and our side-out game was really good. We served well, so it added up to a nice four-set win for us.”
The Bisons, playing their third consecutive game without injured star left side Ray Surinx, also received 16 kills from Light Uchechukwu and 14 from Andi Almonte.
“We had a great weekend and everybody pitched in,” said Ken Bentley. “We had a solid lineup and Andi (Almonte) played great in (Surinx’s) spot today and Light had an amazing weekend.”
Manitoba is hoping Surinx, out with a sprained ankle, might be ready to play in next weekend’s conference quarter-finals.
“It’s week to week,” said Bentley of Surinx’s status. “It’ll be close for the weekend. We have to see how the week of therapy goes.”
In Regina, the Regina Cougars eked out a 3-2 win (25-19, 20-20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11) over Winnipeg to help deny the Wesmen a playoff spot.
Bailey Balaberda had 24 kills for the hosts, who improved to 2-23.
Winnipeg’s Jaya Dzikowicz and Brooke Duncalfe had 17 and 15 kills, respectively. The Wesmen finished 9-15.
BROOK JONES / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS FILES Bisons left side Spencer Grahame had 14 kills Saturday night.
BIG NIGHT FOR OGARANKO: Eric Ogaranko blasted 18 kills and teammate Spencer Grahame added 14 more as Manitoba rallied for a 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 13-25, 15-11) triumph over Saskatchewan in the final regular-season conference men’s volleyball game for both teams at IGAC Saturday.
The win improved Manitoba’s regular-season record to 13-11 and clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference.
Saskatchewan fell to 16-8.
On Friday, Saskatchewan prevailed 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 25-17. 15-10) to set the stage for Saturday’s dramatics.
“After nothing went our way yesterday especially his (Thompson Rivers) beating (Mount Royal) we needed that win today and I think that’s how we went on the court,” said head coach Lupo Ludwig, whose Bisons to on the road to face the top-seeded Alberta Golden Bears in quarter-final action next week.
“We were really focused. I think our game plan from yesterday was already good, we just couldn’t sustain it the whole match but today I think we were really solid on point.”
Karil Dadash Adeh added 12 kills and 16 digs for the hosts, who received a 50-assist performance from setter Sammy Ludwig.
“Eric Ogaranko had probably one of his best games this season,” added Ludwig. “He played really well but as a team and we were very cohesive before game and we were holding each other accountable on the court when when we didn’t do what we wanted to do.”
Isaiah Mamer had 25 kills for the Huskies.
Elsewhere, Winnipeg was idle on the weekend after already wrapping up a playoff berth. The Wesmen were 15-9 in the regular season.
COUGARS SWEEP HERD: In hockey playoffs, the eighth-seeded Manitoba women were beaten 5-1 by the No. 3 Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary Saturday afternoon to complete a sweep in the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final that began with a 6-0 MRU victory Friday night.
Aliya Jomha, Emma Bergesen, Julia Duke, Sydney Benko and Athena Hauck had goals for the hosts.
Brenna Nichol had the lone goal for the Bisons, who received a 26-save performance from Emily Shippam. Kaitlyn Ross stopped 27 shots in the Cougars net.
Mount Royal advanced to a semifinal berth against No. 2 Alberta.
