The Manitoba Bisons have established themselves as a Canada West powerhouse in women’s volleyball and that reputation was reflected in the announcement of the conference all-star teams Tuesday.
The Bisons can boast a trio of all-Stars, including first-team nods for left side Raya Surinx and setter Katreena Bentley, and a second-team selection for libero Julia Arnold. Surinx took another dominant step forward this season after being named last year’s rookie of the year. Surinx led the conference by a wide margin with 388 kills, 70 more than the nearest competitor.
Her teammate Bentley played a key part in that success, leading the country in assists per set (10.92).

Manitoba, ranked No. 3 in the country, will host the Fraser Valley Cascades in a best-of-three conference semifinal starting Thursday at 7 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. with Game 3, if necessary, to be played Saturday at 6 p.m.
In addition, Winnipegger Brooklyn Olfert of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack was named to the second all-star team.
The Winnipeg Wesmen, while missing the post-season, had two players — left side Brooke Duncalfe and middle Grace Vallis — named to the all-rookie squad.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg left side Isaiah Olfert and Brandon Bobcats middle Paycen Warkentin of Gladstone received nods for the men’s first all-star team.
In addition, Winnipegger Jack Taylor of the UBC Okanagan Heat and Alberta libero Dylan Martens, a Winnipegger, and BU libero Kale Fisher earned spots on the all-rookie team.
The Wesmen will open their best-of-three conference semifinal Thursday against the Trinity Western Spartans.
