Mounties are searching for a man after a gun was fired at two people inside a Gimli home, leading to schools and municipal facilities in the Interlake community to lock their doors Thursday.
The incident happened on Lake Avenue at about 1 p.m., RCMP said Friday.
No one was injured. The two victims, a 55-year-old woman from Fisher River Cree Nation and a 27-year-old man from Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation (Jackhead), left the scene and contacted police.
The suspect had also left the home. Police patrolled the area but could not find the suspect. The suspect and residents are known to each other, police said Thursday.
A 32-year-old Kinonjeoshtegon woman was arrested after officers found an unsecured gun in the home. The firearm is not believed to have been the one used by the shooter, RCMP said.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Joseph Henderson, 28, of Fort Alexander. He’s believed to be in Winnipeg, RCMP said.
Henderson has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats and numerous firearms-related offences.
He’s considered armed and dangerous, and police are advising people not to approach him. Mounties are asking anyone with information on where Henderson is to call Gimli RCMP at 204-642-5106, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or manitobacrimestoppers.com.
The Evergreen School Division said Thursday that RCMP contacted division officials asking them to place the three Gimli schools in a hold-and-secure protocol. A hold-and-secure is usually called when a serious situation is taking place in the community at large.
Rural Municipality of Gimli officials said in a social media message Thursday that the closures were ordered as a precaution. In a later social-media post, the RM said all after-school programs were cancelled for that evening.
