Stryker Zablocki made magic again Saturday night.
The star Regina forward scored once in every period to power the visiting Rebels to a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Ice in Game 2 of the Esso Cup U18 Female Hockey West Regional at the hockey for all centre Saturday night.
Regina swept the best-of-three series and advanced to the Esso Cup U18 national championship.
“It hurts losing — we’re absolutely disappointed — but like I told the girls, ‘I’m so proud of them,’” said Ice head coach Eugene Kaminsky. “‘We didn’t lose because we didn’t play well.’ I told them, ‘I wish I could have gone in there and just kicked a garbage can and told you guys you need to play better but you guys played as well as you could. You got beat by a good team with a really good player.’ There’s not much more you can say.”
Cassie Carvalho scored the lone goal for the hosts.
Laura Melizza made 30 stops in the Ice net while Regina’s Tresek finished with 27 saves.
Zablocki, a member of Canada’s U18 national team, scored the overtime winner and added an assist in Friday’s 4-3 series-opening Regina win.
“She’s really good,” said Kaminsky of Zablocki. “Anytime you put the puck on her stick, she’s a huge threat. There’s no doubt about it. We did our best to minimize that — we have a good D corps — but she always found a way to get a good opportunity to get a shot and she missed a few, too. And Laura made some great saves as well. Yeah, but that power-play goal she scored (in the second period) was a really nice goal.”
Regina also successfully limited Winnipeg forward Stephanie Jacob, the Manitoba MVP and scoring champ, in the clinching game.
“She didn’t get a ton of great looks and they had they had their top D matched up against her and we looked at different ways of giving her opportunities to get away from that but that… was really a difference,” said Kaminsky. “You can see it on the scoresheet.”
The Rebels also swept last year’s West Regional by beating the visiting Ice twice in overtime. Winnipeg had two-goal leads in the third period of both games before Regina rallied to tie and forced extra time.
Regina now travels to the Esso Cup where they were the bronze medallists a year ago. Five regional representatives and a host squad will compete in the U18 national championship, to be held April 21-27 in Vernon, B.C.
