Two teens are facing charges after a girl was assaulted in the St. John’s neighbourhood while other youths recorded the attacks.
The incident started when a group of youths were walking on the evening of May 14. A 15-year-old girl was with a group of other teens she knows when multiple people in the group challenged her to a fight, police said.
“The situation escalated to the point of the victim being rendered defenceless as she was repeatedly kicked and punched by one individual,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.
Police said some of the teens in the group have been identified as members of Project Surge — youths linked to numerous incidents involving property crimes, nuisance offences and violence.
The victim continued walking with the other teens because she feared walking alone in the area, police said. The same person who attacked her earlier did so again while they walked through a park, the WPS said.
The other youths made no attempt to stop the assaults and recorded the violence on their phones, police said.
The victim eventually ran to safety and called for help. The WPS said she was threatened over social media in the following days.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested June 11 and charged with uttering threats to kill and two counts of assault. A 15-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday and charged with causing a disturbance and two counts of assault.
Both youths were detained in custody.
