The Carillon Sultans and the Elmwood Giants are all tied up in the best-of-five series to claim the Manitoba Junior Baseball League championship.

The Sultans, who lost Game 1 of the series 6-5, came out with a strong 15-hit performance to take Game 2 and get back into the series.

The Sultans opened the scoring in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead off the bat of Joe Plett and increased their lead to 3-0 in the second thanks to RBI doubles by Rylan Penner and Cody Gunderson.

The Giants clawed back to take a 4-3 lead at the bottom of the fifth, but thanks to a five-run sixth inning, the Sultans returned the comeback favour and didn’t look back.

They added three more at the top of the seventh to seal the deal, winning 11-6 at Koskie Field in Winnipeg.

Starting pitcher Cedric Lagasse picked up the win for the Sultans, striking out four players and allowing six hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

The Sultans hope to break a 12-year championship drought, while the Giants are attempting to win their sixth championship in seven years.

The Sultans will return to their home field in Steinbach after tying the series 1-1 for Game 3 at A.D. Penner Park Friday (7:00 p.m.)
