Manitoba’s title defence is still on despite a rough start at the Canadian U22 Baseball Championship in Dartmouth, N.S.
After going 0-4 in the round-robin stage and scoring only 11 combined runs in those contests, Manitoba’s bats came alive in a 19-9 fifth-inning mercy rule victory over Prince Edward Island in the quarter-final Saturday evening.
Jonah Norman, who had been a bright spot while the offence struggled, continued his strong tournament with a 4-for-5, three-RBI effort.
Bennett Freiter also found a rhythm, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI.
Manitoba will play Ontario 1 in Sunday’s semifinal at 7:30 a.m.
Represented by the St. Boniface Legionaires, who won the 2023 Manitoba Junior Baseball League championship, Team Manitoba hopes to find some of the magic that helped the province snap its 13-year drought in Stonewall last summer.
