It wasn’t for a professional tournament victory — he’s still waiting on that to happen with several close calls so far — but a dramatic eagle putt on the final hole of play Sunday was one of the biggest of Aaron Cockerill’s career.

The 32-year-old Stony Mountain product shot up the leaderboard to finish tied for ninth at the prestigious Irish Open and padded his bank account in the process.

Cockerill finished two-under for the event after rounds of 71-69-71-71. That led to one of the bigger paydays of his career in the form of approximately CDN $165,000, which pushes his year-to-date earnings to just over CD$1 million.

His fourth top-10 of the year also moves him to 39th-overall on the DP World Tour standings for the season. The top 70 gain entry into the final two playoff events in November, while the top 110 maintain their tour card for next season

Rasmus Højgaard shot a final round 65 to win at nine-under, one stroke ahead of Rory Mcllroy. The tournament was being played at Mcllroy’s home base at Royal County Down, which is one of the top golf courses in the world.

FAB FINISH FOR FANNING — Another local golfer had an impressive weekend on the links. Todd Fanning finished tied for ninth at the Canadian men’s Senior Championship at the Saugeen Golf Club in Port Elgin, Ont.

Fanning, 56, had rounds of 71-75-71-71 to finish at even-par. American Miles McConnell won the event at eight-under, beating England’s Stephen Jensen in a playoff.

Fanning, one of this province’s most decorated players, had the third-best score among Canadian participants, as only Steve Wheeler of British Columbia and Dave Bunker of Ontario finished ahead of him at one-under.

The Niakwa member was one of three Manitobans to make the cut. Jay Doyle (Niakwa) finished T-58 at 20-over, while Ron Cornell (Clear Lake) finished T-68th at 24-over.

Four other local players — 2024 Manitoba Senior’s champion Brad Moore (Pine Ridge), Dwayne Heinrichs (Bel Acres), Mike Walker (St. Boniface) and Rob Oliphant (Rossmere)— did not make it beyond 36-holes.
