A 16-year-old boy was killed in a shooting in Winnipeg’s North End on Saturday morning.

The homicide victim was found when officers responded to a gun call on the 500 block of Boyd Avenue, near Andrews Street, shortly after 6 a.m., said police.

He was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital in critical condition.

A resident who lives nearby said he woke up around 3 a.m. to the sound of three gun shots.

“Next thing, it’s 6 a.m. and there’s five more gun shots,” said the resident, who declined to provide his name.

A memorial set up at the corner of Boyd Ave. and Andrews St. identified the victim as a boy named Trey.

A memorial with action figures, empty liquor bottles, flowers and loose cigarettes was on display at the scene Monday afternoon.

A poster board with photos of a male and words of condolence leaned against a telephone pole.

“Always loved” and “long live”, read the poster.

“He’s just a boy, how sad is that,” said one woman who stopped to look at the memorial.

Anyone with information or surveillance video is asked to call the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
