A 23-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged after a Transit supervisor was threatened with an improvised torch Friday morning.

Police officers responded to the assault at Fort Street and Graham Avenue around 8 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Saturday.

The supervisor boarded a bus to wake up a passenger who had been asleep for several hours. The passenger got off the bus but then aimed a torch, made from a can of hairspray and a lighter, at the supervisor, police said.

A man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a Transit supervisor with a weapon Friday morning.

The Transit employee pushed the man to the ground and disarmed him, police said.

The passenger was charged with assault with a weapon and detained in custody.

The union that represents Transit drivers has long sounded the alarm about violence and safety concerns on city buses.

In February, the city launched a community safety team, whose officers are tasked with patrolling the Transit network.

The team reported nearly 1,720 incidents or activities between Feb. 20 and Sept. 30, with almost three-quarters involving well-being checks.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505, which represents bus drivers, wants the city to take security measures a step further with fully-enclosed operator shields, an expansion of the community safety team or a dedicated Transit police force, and the use of artificial intelligence to detect weapons and alert authorities when carried onto a bus.
