Hey there, time traveller!

For the last seven years, Lorraine Rempel’s volunteering has gone to the dogs.

The River Heights resident donates her time as a puppy raiser with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind guide dog program.

Since February 2018, Rempel has raised four puppies for CNIB. A fifth puppy — Ollie, a black Labrador retriever cross — joined Rempel’s family last week.

The lifelong dog lover applied to volunteer after seeing an ad for the program when it started in Winnipeg in 2017.

“I was looking for a different volunteer job and it sounded like something that was really enjoyable,” says Rempel, 59.

CNIB puppies have specific guidelines they need to follow: they are never allowed on furniture, they learn to relieve themselves on command, they are instructed to sit for long periods of time and they are trained to ignore distractions.

Puppy raisers take the dogs into their homes and get them used to going to places like the grocery store, the movie theatre and the gym so they can be exposed to different environments and situations.

Being with the puppies and seeing them progress is meaningful for Rempel.

She fondly recalls Jennie, a black Labrador retriever cross who arrived in her home in May 2019. Jennie was sweet, affectionate and loved to play hide and seek.

Saying goodbye to Jennie was difficult, but it was not the last time Rempel saw her. Rempel has a daughter in Ottawa, so while she was in the area she visited the Canine Campus to see how Jennie’s training was going.

“I could already see the milestones she was hitting: not looking at squirrels, walking in a very straight line, finding the pedestrian (crosswalk) button,” Rempel recalls. “To see what they go through and know that you’ve been a part of that is an incredible feeling.”

For people with sight loss, having a guide dog is a transformational experience.

Puppy raisers play a critical role in making sure future guide dogs are happy, healthy and confident before they advance to their training in southern Ontario, says Hannah Guttormson, puppy development trainer.

CNIB’s puppy raising program currently has 11 dogs in Winnipeg and the organization is looking to double that number in 2025.

Guttormson and her colleagues are looking for patient dog lovers with flexible schedules to volunteer as puppy raisers.

It’s a 12-month commitment, with CNIB supplying the necessary equipment and providing one-on-one training. Additionally, puppy raisers from across the city meet together for group support.

For details, including information about shorter-term puppy raising opportunities, visit CNIB’s website or call 1-800-563-2642.

“Working with puppies is an amazing experience,” Guttormson says. “The (hardest part is) being OK with saying goodbye. I’ll be the first to tell (people) it’s not easy. It’s definitely emotional.

“But I always tell people that emotion and that goodbye just tells us we’ve done our job — we’ve bonded, taught and loved this puppy and prepared them for their future.”

As difficult as it’s been for Rempel to say goodbye to the puppies she’s raised, it’s been worth it.

“I find it’s important to have something to volunteer with that fits well with my lifestyle and hopefully gives back to somebody else down the road.”
