A man and a woman rushed to hospital after a house fire late Friday night have since died.
A Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson said Monday that the man and woman, both in their 80s, died after the blaze on the first 100 block of Riverside Drive.
Police don’t believe the fire was arson.
Firefighters were sent to the two-storey home in Fort Garry shortly before 11 p.m. Crews had to fight the fire from outside the home until they could enter, where they found the man and woman.
The fire was declared under control shortly after 1:15 a.m. Saturday. The cause is under investigation.
Early Monday, crews extinguished a fire in a high-rise apartment building on the first 100 block of Garry Street. Firefighters were sent to the building at 12:38 a.m. and declared the fire under control at 1:13 a.m.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were also busy dealing with fires in several vacant structures in the past few days.
Crews were sent to a two-storey commercial building on the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue at 7:12 a.m. Monday and declared the fire under control at 7:36 a.m. The building was damaged in a fire on Dec. 4 and sustained previous damage from several smaller fires last year.
Crews extinguished four fires in vacant structures Sunday. Firefighters were sent to a boarded-up apartment building on the first 100 block of Woodrow Place at 5:56 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 6:26 p.m.
At 4:34 p.m., crews were sent to a boarded-up, one-storey house on the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue and declared the fire under control at 4:57 p.m. The house was previously damaged in a fire on Nov. 20, 2018, when people still lived there.
Crews were sent to a vacant house on the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue earlier that afternoon and to a boarded-up house on the 600 block of Maryland Street that morning.
